Contractors Call For 20% Wage Cut

The Building Trades Employers’ Association has launched a campaign to inform Rank and File Building Trade Union members and the public about the need to reduce costs that will protect union construction jobs.

The campaign, “Build Union Jobs,” will consist of subway advertisements, a website and op-eds in the press and will outline how the number of union construction jobs will keep shrinking unless union work becomes more economically competitive. Subway ads are running from March 7th to April 11th, 2011.

Union construction workers are experiencing over 30% unemployment.  At the same time, market share of non-union construction continues to grow because it is 20-30% less expensive than union work.

Contractors, who are represented by the Building Trades Employers' Association, say that major concessions are necessary to help crank up the city's construction industry.

They have provided unions with a 26-point list it calls a "Framework For Reducing Union Construction Cost", which includes 25 proposed rule changes and a 20% reduction in wages and fringe benefits.

  1. John how can you post this. How can this be true. Frank Spencer told you already that the 20% wage cut was an unfounded rumor. Are you calling Frank Spencer a liar???
This is not only a wage give back it is a give back to slave labor. "You will take coffee at your work station." The contractors will have the right to eliminate rules!!The Contractor will have the exclusive right to make new rules. Will McPussy,Spencer or any other UBC rat prick be taking 20% wage cuts. Will the contractors be taking a 20% profit cut??Tell Ballantyne the answer is no.How will any of this do anything other than put more profit in the pockets of the contractors and throw us back into a job atmosphere of slave labor.
Lets include a few rules of our own. How about we cut off free market recovery money. How about if we actually make the contractor pay the benefits owed.Lets not forget that the contractors were knee deep in Fordes ass and Forde did not rob the Union without their help. How about if we vigorously pursue the contractor crooks and acquire 100% access to their books. How about if we cap the contractors profit margin and massive payouts to their managers and CEOs. What exactly will the contractors be giving back. I notice BETA did not include a single give back to the contractors. How about if they make themselves more viable by cutting their profit margin instead of stealing from the working men and women
Spencer gave back your raises and froze payments and these good old boys gave back nothing. This list makes it clear that market share and competition is not a priority. This list makes it clear that the contractors want the status quo and cash flow to continue on their side but want to rape workers wages and more importantly rape workers rights on our side. Tell BETA to piss off.
The Carpenters Union have not lost market share due to high costs. They have lost market share because McPussy and Spencer have allowed and supported corruption and crooks to run wild in the Carpenters Union.Who the hell wants to do business with thieves. The carpenters Union have lost market share and control of the labor market because who the hell wants to join the Union when the UBC have and are still screwing the members in ways that make the non Union look like boy scouts. Wages stolen. BA and ESTS going to prison. Locals dissolved with out democratic process. The answer to this decimation of the Carpenters Union by not the rank and file but its leadership is to further decimate the paycheck of the rank and file.Let us pay for your criminal activities that have destroyed our credibility to the point the contractors feel they can publish and ask for these ridiculous and outrageous demands. Are the rank ad file responsible for this. Hell no!!! Douglas McCarron and Frank Spencer are.

  3. Gut reaction: if we absolutely have to give it should be wages, but never, never, consider bargaining away our rights. If necessary we strike: it's time to separate the wheat from the chaff, union forever.

I would ask that if you would like to leave a comment that you think of Local 157 Blogspot as your online meeting hall and that you wouldn’t say anything on this site that you wouldn’t, say at a union meeting. Constructive criticism is welcome, as we all benefit from such advice. Obnoxious comments are not welcome.
