On Friday, November 2, former NYCDCC shop steward, David Veltri, was sentenced to 27 months in prison for accepting at least $8,000 in cash bribes during the period of January through May 2004, from the owners of Tri-Built Construction Inc. in return for leaving Union Carpenters off his shop steward reports for the Kings County Hospital project in Brooklyn.
Veltri's actions helped Tri-Built defraud the NYC District Council Benefits Fund out of at least $70,000 in contributions. Veltri, who pled guilty to charges of aiding and abetting the embezzlement of an employee benefit plan on June 15, will also serve a term of 3 years supervised release, pay a fine of $8,000 and provide $70,000 in restitution to the NYCDCC Benefits Fund.
Tri-Built owners Patrick Noel McCaul and James Dermot McGonnell have been charged under a separate indictment for a long-running scheme to defraud the Council and its Benefits Fund.

ReplyDelete14 union carpenters wanted to work for cash the union aids the goverment in destroying one shop stewardand make him pay more restitution and fines than the carpenters willingly gave up and this is everybodies fascade of justice.

ReplyDeleteI am ashamed to be a union carpenter with the likes of David Veltri in our brotherhood. When I joined this union and went through the apprenticeship one thing taught to us was honesty and integrity, being a fine, upstanding citizen, what the hell happened, how did you get in? Someone really blew it this time. The courts were not hard enough on you and your accomplices. You disgraced my union, my brotherhood. Hope you all have a miserable life and may you never carry a union card again anywhere.
ReplyDeleteCompany men usually contribute to corruption, because they owe their priority to the employer, not the union of carpenters. Who knows what kind of deals are going inside closed doors between the worker and the employer. THis is why it's not a good idea to let the mobility contract go trhough. It will only benefit the contractor. These companies have gotten away with a lot of benefit for themselves, and I don't understand why the district council officials have let this to happen. When a shopsteward shows up to a job, he is being treated unfairly and with disrespect. Just becouse he's coming from the outofwork list, he is seen as the enemy of the interest of the company, because the only way these companies can be monitored about their continue corruption is by the presence of an honest shopsteward on the job to take the report of every carpenter on the job. Most company men don't even pay union dues. The only beneficiary of this activity is the contractor. The members who participate in the corruption are just making a living and don't really care about the District Council of Carpenters.
