WASHINGTON, Aug 20, 2008 -- Leaders from throughout the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners today unanimously endorsed Barack Obama for president.
"On all the fundamental issues that affect the lives and well-being of our members, the choice of candidates in this election is clear," said UBC General President Douglas J. McCarron in announcing the endorsement, the first the union has made in a presidential contest since 2000.
"More than 10 years ago our union undertook a comprehensive program of change in order to meet the needs of our members and the industry. It was difficult but necessary, and the results of that work are clear. Our union is growing and our members are enjoying the benefits of that growth.
"It is time that our country takes the same steps to change direction and address the serious problems that affect all working men and women. This administration leaves behind a staggering debt, a legacy of unfair trade deals, and a crumbling infrastructure that will cripple our ability to compete economically.
"We believe that Barack Obama recognizes the necessity for fundamental change in our nation's policies," McCarron said at the close of a meeting of union leadership in Washington, D.C.
The United Brotherhood of Carpenters represents some 550,000 workers in the construction and forest products industries, including large memberships in key swing states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Nevada.

I heard the announcement with you declaring your support of my campaign. I would like at this time to decline your offer.After what your endorsement did to Edwards we would rather you did not help us.
We are familiar with your destruction of the Democratic rights of the UBC membership and your fleecing of the members paychecks to create your personal cash cow. We would not want our name associated with another organization filled with bloated CEOs such as yourself who rob the members to line the pockets of you and your cronies.
Your past has actions also make you a liability. The ULLICO scam is not forgotten. Because you got caught dougy you gave back the money but remember you had to take it in the first place to give it back.Then we have the series of obscene photos of you. How will you ever explain the pictures of you and little Hoffa on Air Force One with GW Bush. The pictures of you and little Hoffa sitting next to George and then you and George at a training center are just well obscene. If they were pictures of you with a hooker (or in your case sliding 20 dollar bills under stalls )we could have worked with it but these are just to much. Of course GW Bush calling you his "Go To Guy" in labor does not help. The fact that you used Elaine Chow to crush democracy in the UBC during the Harrington case is just to much even for Washington to sweep under the rug. Of course lets not forget your Perinni and big business debacle.Oh and the California Pension issues as well.
In closing Doug may I say you would do my campaign a favor if you would piss off and endorse McCain. Your a detriment to your own organization in the mold of a Boss Tweed. We certainly don't want you undemocratic,self serving and greedy ass screwing up our campaign. I think Las Vegas is running a close campaign for animal control officer you could endorse or something. You know those dog catchers they fall for any idiot with sideburns. Hell with a little hair dye you could tell them your Elvis.
