The Director of the Labor Technical College, reporting to the Executive Director of the New York District Council of Carpenters Benefits Funds is responsible for overseeing the operation of the Labor Technical College. He or she is responsible for ensuring that the school meets the requirements for training as established by the National Joint Carpenters Apprenticeship & Training Committee, the United States Department of Labor, the New York State Department of Labor Bureau of Apprenticeship, the New York City Department of Buildings, the New York State Department of Transportation and all other government agencies. The Director is also responsible for the oversight of the Grants Department to secure and administer funds received to be used to further the training of pre-apprentices, apprentices and journeymen.
Responsibilities:
- Manage the College staff which includes instructors and support personnel.
- Oversee the development of the school syllabus to ensure that a wide range of training and educational classes, such as Health and Safety is available to the apprentices and journeymen.
- Oversee the implementation and continued certification of the College program.
- Work with other Union apprenticeship programs to explore and develop opportunities to enhance the training curriculum.
- Prepare and administer an annual budget for the Technical College.
- Review and approve all expenses relating to the operation of the school and Grants Department..
- Work with various community organizations to develop and enhance community relationships.
- Solicit grant money from various Federal, State, Municipal agencies and private foundation resources that support the training programs.
- Represent the Technical College at various conferences, events, boards, related industry associations and in the media.
- Remain current on various Federal, State or Local laws that may impact workplace health, safety, training or educational issues that might impact the College.
- Have a general knowledge of the construction trade and a general understanding of the Union’s rules and operating procedures.
- Must have a minimum of five (5) years of training experience in an educational or industrial environment. A Bachelor of Arts degree or higher is preferred.
- Must be well organized, experienced in managing staff and be able to work independently.
- Must have good communication skills both orally and written.
- Must have the ability to work with the various departments of the District Council representing the interests of the apprentices and contractors.
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF TRAINING
The New York City District Council of Carpenters Labor Technical College is seeking a motivated craftsperson for the position of Assistant Director of Training. The Assistant Director, reporting to the Director of Training, is responsible for assisting and coordinating the day-to-day apprentice and journey level training operations of the Labor Technical College. The Assistant Director of Training must be able to behave in a professional manner with both apprentices and journey members, be able to communicate, write, reason, solve problems and make decisions with a high level of competency.
Responsibilities include:
- Supervision of apprentice and journey level class scheduling and daily operations.
- Coordination of apprentice curriculum scheduling.
- Creating and coordinating apprentice and journey person skills refresher notification training mailings.
- Developing lesson plans and outlines for new journey level and apprenticeship courses.
- Overseeing equipment and materials ordering for skills courses.
- Conducting interviews with applicants for apprenticeship and potential instructors.
- Preparation of skills and certification written tests.
- Transporting tools, equipment and students for off-site training and events as needed.
- Scheduling Millwright apprentices for Steam/Gas Turbine training at the Carpenters International training Center in Las Vegas.
- Ordering text books for apprentices and journey level classes.
- Coordinating construction requests from the building and other offices as necessary.
- Co-supervision of the Labor Technical College’s full-time and per-diem instructional staff.
- 15+ years of documented trade experience.
- Valid driver’s license
- Member in good standing of a United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local Union.
- Good interpersonal skills, especially patience, flexibility and the ability to listen.
- Exceptional organizational and prioritization skills with the ability to multi-task.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel.
- Ability to attend UBC instructor certification qualification training at the UBC International Training Center.
- Flexibility with work hours to train members in the evenings and on Saturdays as necessary.
- Ability to become skilled in TRAIN, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters training management software.
